The Extension Cord Routine Islanders Repeat Until They Wire In Standby Power

November takes the power out here. November is when the calls about generator installation camano island wa start stacking up, usually from a household that works from home and just lost a night to a cord run under the back door. November settles the argument for the people who spent October thinking about it. If you run a small business off a laptop, a router and a client deadline on Camano Island, here is the claim I will defend for the rest of this piece: the portable in your shed is not cheaper than a permanently installed standby unit, it is only billed in smaller pieces nobody bothers to add up.

Every Windstorm Here Starts The Same Way

The forecast says a south wind at 45 and everybody shrugs. Then a limb comes down on a rural feeder and a few hundred meters go dark somewhere between Utsalady and the south end. In the houses I work in, the first ten minutes never vary. Flashlight, a look out the window to see whether the neighbors are dark too, then a walk out to the shed in the rain. The island households I meet budget for roughly three multi hour outages a winter, and they meet all three the same clumsy way.

The Portable Generator Routine Nobody Advertises

Here is that routine, start to finish. You wheel out a 5,500 watt portable that has not moved since March. You pull the cord four or five times before it catches, because the fuel sitting in it is stale. You run two heavy cords in through a cracked door, one to the refrigerator and one to a power strip holding the modem, the router and the laptop. Around hour three you unplug the refrigerator so the well pump can run, and then you forget to plug it back in. Later you drive to the one station still open and stand in line with four cans. The part that fails most often in all this is not the generator, and the case we see most often is a cord run flat under a door that has been pinching a little harder every winter. The Electrical Safety Foundation International still says in August 2026 exactly what it said years ago: cords are temporary, daisy chained strips are a fire hazard, and anything you depend on permanently belongs on a dedicated circuit installed by an electrician.

Fuel And Downtime Add Up Faster Than Expected

Run the arithmetic once and it stops being an argument. Say the shed already holds about $1,000 of portable gear, cans and cords, which is ordinary out here. Three outages at seven hours each is 21 hours of runtime, and a 5,500 watt unit at half load burns close to 0.7 gallons an hour, so call it 15 gallons at $4.80, or $72 of fuel plus two trips to town. Then price the part people leave out. If six of those hours were billable at $75, that is $450 of work pushed into next week, and one of those weeks had a client waiting on a delivery. One winter comes to about $1,522 all in, which is the number worth holding up next to a bid for generator installation camano island wa contractors will size against your actual panel. Those are illustrative figures, not a quote, but the shape of them holds up year after year.

What Changed When Standby Units Got Common

Ten years ago a whole house standby unit out here was unusual enough that neighbors walked over to look at it. The machines ran louder, transfer switches were fussier, and propane meant a yard tank and a longer conversation about setbacks and clearances than most people wanted to have. That has flipped. Propane delivery is routine, air cooled units in the 14 to 22 kilowatt range cover a normal house without special sitework, and a certified dealer can size one against your existing panel in a single site visit. The unit sits on its own pad outside, watches the utility, and starts itself about fifteen seconds after the lights drop. A standby unit earns its price by requiring nothing from you when the power fails. No cords, no cans, no standing in the kitchen at two in the morning deciding whether the freezer or the router gets the outlet.

Island Circuits Take Longer To Get Restored

A feeder that serves a few hundred meters through eight miles of trees does not get the first truck, and that is not a complaint about the utility, it is arithmetic about crews and road access. What it means for you is that the outage you should plan around is not two hours, it is most of a day. That long stretch is also where people start making bad decisions with a portable. Never run one in a garage, in a crawlspace, under a deck or anywhere near an open window, and never plug one into a wall or dryer outlet to backfeed the house, because that can kill a lineman working a line he believes is dead. The Consumer Product Safety Commission puts a single portable generator’s carbon monoxide output on par with hundreds of cars, and links more than 100 deaths a year in this country to portable generators and other engine driven tools. If a CO alarm sounds, or anyone gets a headache or feels dizzy, everyone goes outside immediately and calls 911 from outside. I could spend a page on alarm placement alone, since a unit up on a hallway ceiling does not always catch exhaust seeping up through a floor, but that is somebody else’s article. What matters here is that the hazard lives in the improvised setup, and a permanent installation removes the improvisation.

Wire It In Before The Next November

The right week to do this is a dry one, with nothing broken and no wind in the forecast. A site survey, a pad, the gas or propane connection, the transfer switch and the electrical inspection do not happen in an afternoon, and every installer on this side of the water gets buried the day after the first real blow. Get it sized while the sun is out. What you are buying is not really a machine. It is the end of the routine, and the end of the email explaining to a client why the file is late because a tree fell on a line eight miles away.
