According to TLD distribution data from Domain Name Stat, .com remains the undisputed leader today, with over 37% of registered names worldwide. But thanks to ICANN initiatives, we now have a wide range of options that go far beyond the “standard” variants such as .net or .info.

Although many consider the choice of TLD to be just one of the technical steps in launching a web project, in practice, it is a strategic decision that affects audience trust, branding, and even indirect SEO effects. The diversity of TLDs is evolving under the influence of technology and market trends, and we are here to explore the essence of these extensions and help you choose the one that will become the foundation for the growth of your online business.

What is a TLD, and What Types of Extensions Are There?

Simply put, a TLD (Top-Level Domain) is the final part of a domain name (website address) that indicates either the specific nature of a web project or its geographical affiliation. The first domain was introduced back in 1985, and it is the well-known and still relevant .com.

ICANN initiatives led to the emergence of hundreds of different TLDs (as there were too many .com options and the market became oversaturated). For convenience, all TLDs are now divided into three main categories:

    1. gTLD (generic top-level domains). These are universal and open to everyone, such as .com, .net, and .org.
    2. ccTLDs (country-code top-level domains). Linked to specific countries, they are used to emphasize the locality of web projects.
    3. New gTLDs (i.e., options introduced by ICANN after 2012 for diversity and to cool down the .com market). This category includes options such as .tech or .shop and even some unusual TLDs like .xyz.

The main feature here is that these types of domains do not compete directly, but rather complement each other. According to Domain Name Stat, ccTLDs and new gTLDs together now account for more than 50% of the market, indicating a trend toward domains that emphasize the specialization of web projects.

Popular TLDs in 2025 and Their Strengths

It is noteworthy that about 85% of e-commerce sites and 62% of tech startups still choose .com for its versatility, trustworthiness, and SEO prospects, but the popularity of this option is gradually declining. Let’s take a look at the 5 most popular TLDs today and find out what makes them so attractive:

    • .com. With excellent memorability, ease of typing, indirect SEO benefits through clickability, and the highest level of trust, it is still a universal favorite for brands in various niches. Its only, but very significant, drawback is the shortage of short domain names.
    • .ai. Today, this TLD is showing serious growth of almost 8% (over the last year). The reason for this is obvious: the rapid development of AI technologies. But the cost of .ai-based domains is also increasing, which is a serious drawback.
    • .io. Used primarily by software developers and SaaS companies, it indicates technological sophistication and opens up opportunities for creative use (especially in the British Indian Ocean Territory). However, in some regions, confusion may arise due to its geographical connotations.
    • .shop (or .store). Many e-commerce businesses are switching to these TLDs due to the shortage of .com-based options. They directly indicate commerce, are accessible, and can even increase conversions through specialization. But practice shows that they are still perceived as worse than the ever-popular .com.
    • .tech. Emphasizing expertise and innovation, this option has become the best choice for modern startups. Despite a slight decline (most likely caused by the popularity of the .ai option), it is still a solid choice.

Although there are hundreds of other TLDs, the ones listed above still dominate the market, and it is best to choose from among them for your web project. When it comes to registration, find a reliable platform, e.g., you can buy domain with Spaceship, which offers convenient niche search and brand protection.

Things to Consider When Picking a TLD

Given the ever-increasing competition, you need to find the perfect balance between your project goals and current market realities. We recommend considering the following important aspects when making your choice:

    • Audience. If you are a global brand, .com and .net are preferable as they avoid confusion. But if you want to strengthen your connection to a specific market, then .us, .de, .in, and others (depending on your region) are the best choice.
    • Branding. You can create a unique image using niche options such as .design or .dev. Still short and memorable, these TLDs perform well in the era of voice search.
    • SEO. According to Google, all TLDs are equal in its eyes. But .com may win indirectly due to trust, and ccTLDs may boost local search, and these things cannot be ignored.
    • Cost and availability. Although new .com-based domains may be inexpensive, their price often skyrockets on the secondary market. If you are a startup, it is better to choose .ai or .io options, considering them as an investment in innovation with traffic that is likely to pay off.

Remember that a well-chosen TLD becomes a tool for strengthening the visibility of brands on the global network. That is, you get a valuable asset that builds trust, brings traffic, sales, and, accordingly, profit for your business.
