The edge looked fine. The edge measured fine. That same edge still chewed out eight bolt holes in five weeks on a wheel loader at a three-loader aggregate pit in western Pennsylvania that moves roughly 900 tons a day. The steel was never the problem, which is why cutting edge manufacturing that forms the bevel to the moldboard’s own radius matters more than the hardness number printed on the invoice. A loader moldboard is curved on purpose. The curve rolls material up and across the face instead of shoving it into a wall of dirt, and that curvature runs all the way out to the leading edge where the bevel lives, the bevel being the angled face ground along the cutting side so the blade slices rather than plows. Lay a flat bar against that curve and only the center makes contact. The ends stand off by a sixteenth, sometimes closer to an eighth on a worn board, and every pass through the pile loads those fasteners in bending instead of shear. The holes go first, and they go quietly. Job after job the same two positions fail ahead of everything else, the outermost bolt on each end, where the standoff is widest and the edge is levering against the board on every load. Once a hole goes oval, torque stops meaning anything. The fastener walks, the shim stack you added to close the gap starts wandering with it, and the load transfers into the board skin between holes until a hairline shows up. Not in the field, and not with a press brake and good intentions. Heat-treated wear steel fights back, and bending it cold after treatment risks cracking the material you paid for. Forming happens at the fabricator, before and during heat treatment, which is the whole reason a formed edge costs more than a blank.
How Do I Know If My Edge Is Actually Seating?
Slide a feeler gauge behind the edge at both ends and again at center with everything torqued down. Anything you can get a 0.015 blade into is a gap, and it will show up as elongation later. A rust line or a wash of fines packed behind the edge is the other tell, since material only gets in there if there is somewhere to go.
Are Curved Edges Worth The Extra Cost?
On a flat blade, no, and nobody should sell you one. On a curved moldboard running abrasive aggregate, the added cost usually shows back up in bolt hardware and unplanned downtime within a couple of months. - How is each piece measured before it ships? Look for coordinate measuring or a stated tolerance in thousandths, not a visual check.

- What is the real lead time on a repeat order? A supplier who quotes weeks and then names their stock position is more useful than one who quotes days.
- Can you match a bolt pattern from a template I send? The answer should include how they want the template supplied and who owns the mistake if it misses.
Seat The Edge And The Rest Stops Breaking
Bolt holes do not fail because the bolts are cheap. They fail because something behind the edge is holding it off the board, and every load cycle after that is working against the fastener instead of the ground. Get the edge sitting flat against the curve and the wear goes back where it belongs, out on the cutting face where it is supposed to be. That is a fabrication question long before it is a maintenance question, and it gets answered when somebody measures the board.
