Your smile is one of the things that others notice right away whenever they see you, but taking good care of your teeth and gums is not only considered cosmetic but something well beyond that because preventive dental care is where good oral hygiene should start in order to save you from spending lots of money on dental work in the future.

    Proper Brushing Techniques

    Improving Your Art

Brushing one’s teeth is one activity that most people regularly perform, yet very few are doing it properly. While brushing, one should ensure that the toothbrush is positioned at an angle of 45 Degrees to the gums, with circular motions being preferred to the back-and-forth motion that can easily damage the gums and teeth.

    Timing Matters

Brush for at least two minutes, twice in a day. The fact is that very few individuals make the effort to brush properly in the morning and before retiring to bed, spending only 30 to 45 seconds on the process. The timer should be set so that you can devote adequate time to brushing your teeth.

    Choose the Right Tools

You should choose a brush with soft bristles that can easily fit inside your mouth. Stiffer bristles may clean better, but they can deteriorate the enamel and even harm your gums in the process of cleaning. You would need to change your toothbrush every three to four months, or earlier if the bristles are already worn out.

    The Need for Flossing

Your brushing tool, the toothbrush, can’t clean between the teeth where the bad bacteria are piling up. That is an ideal place where plaque and cavities can easily form. Flossing can significantly help in removing food and plaque residue in areas where the brush couldn’t clean.

    Correct Flossing Practices

You can start with an 18-inch length of floss, winding most of it between the middle fingers to leave you with enough to work with while flossing between the teeth. You can now take the floss and place it between the teeth by rubbing it back and forth, while to clean one side of the teeth, you would curve it in the shape of the letter C to place it between the teeth and the gums.

    Diet and Oral Health

    Foods to Limit

These can lead to an imbalance in the pH level in the mouth, which can be breeding grounds for bad bacteria. Sodas, candies, and citrus fruits can demineralize the teeth to make them weaker. Therefore, while you decide to enjoy them, it is essential to rinse with water before brushing after a period of at least 30 minutes has elapsed.

    Smile-Friendly Foods

Eat foods that are rich in calcium, phosphorus, Vitamins D, and C. Foods include dairy products, leafy vegetables, nuts, and proteins which can help improve the condition of the teeth’ enamel. Crunchy fruits and veggies such as apples and carrots can help to clean the teeth while stimulating saliva in the mouth that can help reduce the risk of problems.

    Regular Dental Check-ups

Despite regular dental maintenance being done even within one’s residence, it is paramount to seek professionals to help clean and check one’s teeth. A top-reviewed dentist in Oklahoma City can help with removing tartar that is difficult to remove even after brushing and flossing one’s teeth. This should be done after every six months, regardless of whether there are other scheduled appointments needed more frequently due to one’s risk factors.

    Preventive Spending vs. High-Cost

Regular dental visits would allow professionals to identify any issues earlier rather than later, and it would be cheaper to treat them at that point in time. For instance, if they knew earlier that they only needed to fill one small cavity rather than undergo root canals or crowns, it would be cheaper.

    Building Habits That Last

Developing good oral habits takes time, but you can easily develop them in the future if you stick to them on a consistent basis. For instance, you can begin with one of the habits listed, perhaps brushing, and take it upon yourself to develop good habits on your own terms. Trust that in the future, you shall thank yourself for being so passionate about preventive healthcare and giving back to yourself in exchange for preserving great oral habits to keep your smile healthy and beautiful!
